چکیده

Abstract We assess how recent glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA) and inter‐earthquake stress transfer modulated the state of on major faults in Southeast Alaska, these effects may have influenced large moderate earthquakes. The Glacier Bay Icefield has lost >3,000 km 3 ice since ca. 1770, with thinning up to 1.5 km, rest southeast Alaska been deglaciating 1900. resulting GIA response solid earth produces present‐day surface uplift rates ∼4 cm/yr, among fastest Earth. This rapid deformation occurs directly alongside atop Fairweather Fault, which accommodates 4–5 cm/yr right‐lateral motion through slip frequent earthquakes, recently including a M w ∼7.8 earthquake 1958. find that 1958 nucleated very close location maximum GIA‐induced Coulomb increase Fault between 1770 (estimated at ∼0.2–0.6 MPa), only section fault where changes had involved both shearing unclamping. September 10, 1899 ∼8.1 Yakutat also promoted failure least northwest part eventual rupture. In turn, earthquakes along St. Elias compressional margin, site ∼7.4 event 1979. While tectonic loading is likely main driver we estimate 23 30 instrumentally constrained ≥ 5.0 this region were by post‐1770 GIA.

Tectonic block motion and glacial isostatic adjustment in southeast Alaska and adjacent Canada constrained by GPS measurements

[1] We use data from campaign and continuous GPS sites in southeast Alaska and the neighboring region of Canada to constrain a regional tectonic block model that estimates block angular velocities and derives a self‐consistent set of fault slip rates from the block motions. Present‐day tectonics in southeast Alaska is strongly influenced by the collision of the Yakutat block. Our model predicts...

Glacial isostatic adjustment in the static gravity field of Fennoscandia

In the central part of Fennoscandia, the crust is currently rising, because of the delayed response of the viscous mantle to melting of the Late Pleistocene ice sheet. This process, called Glacial Isostatic Adjustment (GIA), causes a negative anomaly in the present-day static gravity field as isostatic equilibrium has not been reached yet. Several studies have tried to use this anomaly as a con...

Modelling the glacial isostatic adjustment of the UK region.

The glacial isostatic adjustment of the UK region has been considered in a number of recent studies. We have revisited this problem in order to: (i) highlight some key issues with regard to limitations in the ice modelling approach adopted in these studies and (ii) consider the constraints provided from observations of crustal motion available via continuous global positioning system monitoring...

role of cultural iran in promotion of multilaieralism in central asia and caucasus

cultural iran is a scope that is more extended than the political territories of iran as a political unit. this concept means that cultural geography(mehdi moghanlo-1383-1) of iran is greater than its political geography which, according to history, has a long history extending west-east from kandahar to the euphrates and north-south from the persian gulf to the caucasus including transoxiana a...
